It’s been a fair number of years since my last music festival (Coachella 2009, back in the good old days when it was more about the music and less about what Kylie Jenner wore) and while the thrill of live music is the same, the food and drink options seem to have elevated themselves to a whole new level. Gone are the generic pizza and beer stands and instead Outside Lands was a foodie extravaganza with some of the Bay Area’s best culinary offerings. I barely made a dent in all that was there to offer (not for lack of trying, I tried to persuade our group to stop for a snack between every set but apparently my level of gluttony was matched by no one else), but here are just a couple of the more out-there things I tried.
I’ve never been a huge fan of ice cream (not to say I don’t like it, I just tend to go for other desserts if given a choice), but since moving to the Bay I’ve discovered that ice cream can be SO much better than I ever imagined. This edition of Streets & Eats will feature Smitten ice cream. What’s so special about it you ask? Not only do they use fresh ingredients for made-to-order scoops, they also churn their ice cream using a patented “Brrr” machine which uses liquid nitrogen to make the smoothest, creamiest ice cream. In addition to their regular flavors, which are a far cry from any typical ice cream flavor you’ve seen (brown sugar cinnamon shortbread?? Yums!), they also have a rotation of flavors every month featuring the seasons best ingredients. Think Nectarine for July, Creme Fraiche with Pear Caramel for September, Sticky Toffee Pudding in December and Blood Orange Pistachio Shortbread for May. Each flavor also comes with an ideal “pairing” of toppings, as well as hand-picked sundae and ice cream sandwich options. They only have a few locations in the Bay area right now (I’m lucky enough to have one at the Whole Foods nearby), but with the option to “wagoneer” (a.k.a cater), you can bring all this glory to your next event or party! As a new feature to my blog, I’ve decided to add a series featuring things to do/eat/drink in the Bay Area…welcome to Streets and Eats! For my first post, I’m going to tell y’all about the glory that is the Treasure Island Flea. Held on the last weekend of every month, this is a great way to spend a sunny day eating, drinking and hunting for trinkets. There’s a ton of stalls to buy everything you could imagine, as well as food trucks, live music and drinks. The weekend that I went they also had a wine tent, so we picked up a bottle (at only 8 bucks a pop!) and sat out on the grass drinking wine and eating delicious food (is there honestly anything better than day drinking?) If you buy your tickets online, you get a discount and a free drink. Check out my pictures, and make sure to hit it up ASAP!
